6 Holiday Activities that Help Build your Summer Body

Warmer weather is here again and for those of us who have fallen victim to the chocolatey comforts of winter, so is the new spring workout routine. Staying fit and active on holiday can be tricky, but if you incorporate exercise with daily activities, you’ll be fit and ready for summer in no time! Try these 6 activities on your holiday to stay on track for summer.

1)     Hiking

South Africa sports some of the most famous hiking trails in the world. You don’t necessarily have to take on the Otter trail, but a brisk walk on a short route can burn up to 400 calories an hour. Our favourite trails include the Sani Pass in KwaZulu Natal and the Blyde River Canyon in Mpumalanga.

2)     Surfing

Maybe not the easiest of activities, but definitely a great way to get your heart rate up and enjoy every minute of it! Work on your balance and upper body strength and you can burn anything from 200 calories up. Try this on your beach holiday in Durban or Richards Bay.

3)     Horse-Riding

This one’s a hit with all of the fit animal lovers. Not only do you get to hang out with some of the most majestic animals on the planet, but you’ll also burn about 270 calories while you work on your core and legs. Keep on the look-out for local tours and stables, as these are a dime a dozen in most popular holiday spots.

4)     Rollerblading

Fun for the whole family, this adrenaline filled activity can be done almost anywhere! Get yourself some skates and head on down to the nearest beach boardwalk or strip and you could burn a whopping 475 calories per hour! The Sea Point promenade in Cape Town is our all-time favourite rollerblading spot.

5)     Snorkeling

Experience a whole new world underneath the surface of South Africa’s coastal waters. Perfect for those east, north and south coast getaways, treading water while viewing shoals and the magical sea-life can burn 340 calories per excursion.

6)     Tennis

No need to be a Wimbledon champ, just head out to the local club and play a family match of active doubles to burn at least 340 calories an hour. Caution: try not to binge on strawberries and cream after the match, or you’ll need to slot in another round for tomorrow…
