How to Plan a Road Trip like a Pro

Summer is here in full swing and the holidays are just around the corner! Instead of expensive air travel, try a fun- filled road trip to your vacation spot. Need some help planning? We’ve got you covered! Use these pro-tips to plan your perfect year-end road trip.

Agree on Expectations

Make sure everyone is on the same page as to how they would like the road trip to play out. Try asking these questions:

  • What route are we planning to take?
  • Are we planning to make any detours or stops along the way?
  • Are we going to drive in shifts?
  • How are we splitting the petrol and toll expenses?
  • Are we packing snacks or eating at restaurants?
  • What will accommodate everyone’s budget?

Answering these questions will manage expectations and help prevent any frustration.

Pack Hard Copies of Travel Documents and Directions

You never know when the signal gods will frown upon you. Make sure you keep back up maps, brochures and other travel documents just in case technology fails or the car charger is forgotten at home.

Service your Car

You don’t have to book your car for a full service. Just make sure your tires and other essentials have been properly checked. Sort out issues before your trip, as this takes away the stress of dealing with an unexpected roadside crisis.

Join the AA/Roadside Assistance

If your insurance doesn’t include this service, register with the AA to get roadside assistance in case of an emergency. You can read more on their offering here.

Book Your Hotel in Advance

Although we encourage spontaneity, we do recommend confirming at least one place to stay ahead of time. Choose a hotel destination that everyone is comfortable with and that is safe and reputable. For a range of affordable and luxury hotel accommodation in South Africa, click here.
